Us Could Triple Renewable Energy Share By 2030
Renewable EnergyIN BRIEF A new report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Abu Dhabi. says that the US is able to more than triple its renewable energy share by 2030 and the country's total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity could reach 135 GWe. The US could increase the use of renewables in its energy mix from 7.5% in 2010 to 27% by 2030. The report, entitled "Renewable Energy Prospects: USA" also says the US can increase renewable energy's share of the electricity market from 14% to almost 50% by 2030, making it the second-largest user of renewable energy in the world in 2030 after China. In 2030, utility-scale solar PV could be the cheapest, followed by onshore wind and natural gas, the report says. The report is part of IRENA's renewable energy roadmap, REmap 2030, which provides a plan to double the share of renewable power in the world's energy mix by 2030 and determines the potential for the US and other countries to scale up the renewables share in their energy systems, including power, industry, buildings, and the transport sector. To reach the 27% renewables target, the US would need to make an annual investment of US86 billion until 2030 - an increase of US38 billion annually. However, with existing policies, the share of renewables in the US energy mix is only set to reach 10% by 2030. A review of this target would be desirable, since a higher renewable share could result in annual savings of from US30 to US140 billion by 2030, when accounting for human health and reduced emissions.
